Distilling Returns to Lexington’s Distillery District

Back in Lexington’s golden age of distilling at the turn of the last century, a section of Manchester Street bustled with the activity of making bourbon. Dubbed, ‘the Distillery District,’ the area now hosts a stop on the KY Bourbon Trail Craft Tour® program at the Barrel House Distillery.

Situated entirely inside the old barrel house building of the former James E. Pepper distillery - hence the name - the Barrel House Distillery is one of the oldest modern craft distilleries, rapidly approaching its tenth year of operation. Working with locally-sourced grains and a 500 liter still imported from Portugal, the small distillery team produces vodka, moonshine,bourbon-barrel aged rum and, of course, bourbon. They also craft a unique barrel-aged moonshine dubbed Devil John Dark ‘Shine after the legendary Eastern Kentucky lawman/moonshiner Devil John Wright.

In addition to making spirits, the distillery also houses The Elkhorn Tavern which offers guests an opportunity to imbibe on the products they make plus other Kentucky bourbons, craft beers, wine and specialty cocktails.

The distillery is open for visitors Wednesday - Sunday from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm with tours on the hour and the last tour at 4:00 pm. Elkhorn Tavern opens at noon on Wednesday - Sunday.
